Social Media Engagement Checklist for Your New Small Business

Social Media is a great tool for material marketing, however, there are some guidelines to the game. A few weeks ago we talked about creating a strong social media presence for your small business, and today I want to follow it up with these 10 recommendations for effective publishing that gets engagement.

1. Use excellent visuals.

Visual content is what will stop individuals from scrolling through the unlimited parade of their feed and checking out your post. If you do not have an image directly associated with your organization, use some stock imagery from a free site like Pixabay or Unsplash.

You can also go to and find a plethora of free and premium photos and videos you can use for your feeds.

2. Write excellent copy.

Pictures are what will attract your audience’s attention. But the caption is what will get them to engage.

Usage good grammar, flawless spelling, and suitable punctuation with appropriate spacing.  I love using Grammarly to help me catch mistakes.  Their free version is amazing, but if you need more of a punch, invest in the paid version.

The best way to take advantage of this service is by adding it to your plug-ins (if you use Chrome)

3. Don’t make it all about you.

Do not promote your organization and items straight up all of the time. Post about subjects in your market, or repost products from other individuals to construct your trustworthiness and engagement with a broader audience.

Keep in mind that people who will buy from you need to know you, like you, and trust you.  I like to imagine my lead as my new friend.

How can I show them they can trust me, like me, and know me?

4. Usage hashtags.

For the majority of social network websites, your post may also be undetectable if you’re not using hashtags. Hashtags tell people what classification your post falls into, and draws in more engagement from people taking a look at what’s new because subject.

Instagram and other network sites are constantly updating their algorithms and the way they use hashtags.  My rule of thumb is to use 5 to 10 excellent tags that will bring in the right type of lead.

5. Be brief.

Don’t make your posts too long, because readers will get tired and move on. Keep your sentences short.

Find and use synonyms for longer words to shorten your content. As you know, we only have a few seconds of our audience’s time so make it count.

6. Post at essential times.

This varies by social media type, but your post will get in front of a big audience. You can do a fast Google search to see what days and times are best for the social media platforms you’re utilizing.  If you can’t post at the optimal times, try auto-posting services like

7. Involve the readers.

Put engaging concerns into your post that will generate discussion and response. If people are developing on the thread below your words, you know your post has actually been a success.

8. Be consistent.

In today’s socially linked world, it’s not overkill to post, post, and post again. Individuals may need to see something a minimum of a dozen times prior to even clicking it, so don’t be scared to keep trying, and don’t give up.

If you posted something 6 weeks ago, repost it today!

This content will be new to your new followers and chances are everyone else forgot or didn’t see this the first time around.  Just make sure to update or change the graphics accompanying the post.

9. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of auto-posting.

You may think that auto-posting conserves your energy and time, however, an organic effort sustained by the motivation of the moment may yield much better outcomes.

There are times when auto-posting is a lifesaver and there are times when you just need to post in real-time.

For example, if you are hosting an event, you might want to update your followers on what is happening at the moment.

10. Keep in mind the audience.

Different social media platforms are tailored toward different users, so while you might be fine tossing up images of your weekend on Instagram, that tactic could backfire on LinkedIn.
