Last week, I wrote “A Complete Guide to Starting Your Small Business”. I wanted to expand on the “launching your business” section because this part tends to be the toughest for new business owners.
Many of my clients sit with me so we can bounce ideas and plan an effective launch. The plan that we come up with ultimately depends on the type of business, location, and what products or services are being sold.
With everything in place – meaning you’ve developed a solid business idea, created a comprehensive business plan, secured financing, chosen the right business structure, registered your business, set up your location, and developed a marketing strategy – it’s time to launch your business.
This is a pivotal moment, and planning a launch event or promotion can help you attract attention and generate excitement. A successful launch sets the tone for your business and creates a buzz that can attract your first customers.
Here are some additional steps to make your launch a hit:
Host a Launch Event
Organize a grand opening event to introduce your business to the community. Invite friends, family, local media, and influencers. Offer refreshments, product samples, or demonstrations of your services.
This event can help you build relationships and generate word-of-mouth buzz.
For example, if you’re opening a boutique, you could host a fashion show featuring your latest collections. If you’re launching a home bakery, set up tasting stations with your signature desserts.
Leverage Social Media
Use your social media platforms to build anticipation leading up to your launch. Share behind-the-scenes content, countdowns, and teasers. On the day of your launch, go live to give your followers a virtual tour and interact with them in real-time.
For instance, if you’re starting a wellness coaching business, share videos of you preparing your workspace or snippets of the services you offer.
Offer Special Promotions
Attract customers by offering special promotions or discounts during your launch period. Limited-time offers can create a sense of urgency and encourage people to try your products or services.
For example, if you’re starting a skincare line, you could offer a free sample with every purchase or a discount on your best-selling items.
Engage with Local Media
Reach out to local newspapers, radio stations, and online publications to cover your launch. A press release or an interview can help you gain valuable exposure and credibility.
Share your story, why you started your business, and how it will benefit the local community. This is especially effective for businesses like a new yoga studio or a handcrafted jewelry line.
Collaborate with Other Businesses
Partner with other local businesses to co-host events or cross-promote your launch. This collaboration can expand your reach and introduce your business to a broader audience.
For instance, if you’re opening a cafe, partner with a local bookshop for a coffee-and-books event. If you’re launching an eco-friendly cleaning service, collaborate with a local home goods store for a joint promotion.
Create an Email Campaign
Send out an email blast to your subscribers announcing your launch. Include details about your event, special offers, and what makes your business unique. Encourage them to share the news with their friends and family.
If you don’t have a large email list yet, don’t let that stop you. Send an email to all of your friends, family, previous colleagues, acquaintances, and every one you know. Now is not the time to be shy.

For example, you could include a referral incentive where subscribers who refer new customers get a discount on their next service.
Collect Feedback
Use your launch event as an opportunity to gather feedback from attendees. Ask for their thoughts on your products or services and use their input to make any necessary improvements. Consider setting up a feedback station at your event or sending a follow-up survey to attendees.
This is particularly useful for businesses like a new fitness studio or a personalized gift shop.
Follow Up
After your launch, follow up with everyone who attended or showed interest. Thank them for their support, share highlights from the event, and let them know about any upcoming promotions or events. A personalized thank-you note or email can go a long way in building customer loyalty.
Launching your business is the culmination of your hard work, dedication, and dreams. The journey has been challenging, filled with countless decisions and efforts to bring your vision to life.
But as you officially open your doors, you’ll experience an immense sense of pride and accomplishment. The excitement of welcoming your first customers and seeing your business come to life is a reward that makes all the hard work worthwhile.
