5 Business Motivational Strategies

If you own your own business or are an entrepreneur, you will frequently confront problems that sap your enthusiasm to keep going. Trust me, I've been there myself plenty of times.

But here are a few strategies for controlling the troops and finding the courage to keep on.

1. Establish your basic values.

A mission statement encapsulating core principles will guide your organization through good and bad times by helping you discover direction and carrying you through stormy periods.

"Making money" is not a goal that will keep you driven when clients aren't arriving, but "delivering sustainable sources of energy" or anything equally specific will keep you motivated towards a goal that forms part of the wider picture.

I like to keep a reminder on my corkboard.

2. Look over the checkpoints.

Because your aim is monolithic and too far into the future, there may be a gap between your desired results and the actual results of what has happened so far. Look at smaller components to gain a more accurate picture of how things are going, which will also boost your enthusiasm to keep carrying the flame.

3. Spend time with your friends.

The people surrounding you have a significant impact on your achievement. When it comes to owning your own business, there will be plenty of skeptics who will offer their two cents, but take it all with a grain of salt.

Instead, look for like-minded visionaries and entrepreneurs at networking events as well as in casual settings. Find inspiration and motivation from those in comparable positions who have a creative vision for the future.

4. Remember that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

If you're a business owner who has previously worked in the 9-to-5 industry, you'll remember what it's like to sign away your schedule and basically your soul to a corporate master. While having your own business is difficult, it beats being underpaid, underappreciated, and overworked by someone who can fire you at the drop of a hat.

Do you really want to be in that kind of situation again?  Sometimes we don't have an option and must do what is needed in order to provide for our family, but when we do have the option to keep going forward, we must!

5. Determine what you desire.

Desire is the driving factor behind practically everything, including business. It's simple to become discouraged if you've set your ambitions as narrow goals like making more money.

But if you dive a bit deeper and get to some core reasons for being inspired, such as a better home, caring for your family, or living life to the fullest, it's simpler to stay the course.  Keep asking yourself "Why" until you get to the core.
